Sleeping Tips for Puppies
Peaceful nights come faster than you think — here’s the recipe.
How Much Sleep Is Normal
Puppies sleep 18–20 hours a day. If your baby seems to crash constantly, that's healthy — growing is exhausting work. Protect nap time, especially with children in the home: a rested puppy is a well-behaved puppy.
The Bedtime Routine
Last meal by early evening, water up an hour before bed, a final potty trip right before lights out, then into the crate with a soft blanket. Same order, same time, every night — puppies thrive on ritual.
The First Nights
Your puppy just left everything they know. Keep the crate beside your bed so they can hear you breathe; a ticking clock or a snuggle toy with a heartbeat can stand in for littermates. Expect one overnight potty trip at first — keep it silent and businesslike.
Crying at Night
Check the basics once (potty? comfort?), then let quiet win the door. If you open the crate every time crying starts, crying becomes the doorbell. Most babies sleep through within the first week or two.
